Why do wolves or butterflies show up on lupus websites?

One of the indicators of lupus is the butterfly shaped rash, also known as a malar rash, that shows on the face. It was thought that the rash looked similar to a bite or scratch from a wolf. That is why many lupus sites have icons of a butterfly or wolf.
